I Think Starting Is Always The Hardest
Where do you begin?
I think starting is always the hardest. Where do you begin, how do you get started and how do you get people to hire you? It’s like when you start a service based business you are putting the cart before the horse, you can’t really have a “business” without clients to serve.
Since I graduated from college (in 2001) I spent several years getting licensed, so I worked for companies and did internships right after college. Then I had kids and was out of the profession for quite some time. Now, re-entering it, I need to start sketching ideas again. Get a feel for my style and start showing things I can do, ideas that I have, what I want to do and create a portfolio for ideas.
I heard once that Oprah put up her own money to start her Discovery channel show. She said when she started out, she used her own money to start the show because she didn’t know if it was going to be successful or how the ratings would be.
This is why I want to develop my own project and design a spec home, that is a “speculative” project that I design and build myself. Then once it’s completed I can sell it and hopefully, it will spur on more work, or give me the financial ability to build another home. I feel like it’s the only way that I’ll be able to design my style of home, and my ideas and inspirations can come to life, without the risk of screwing up someone else’s project. It’s the best of both worlds, I get to do the type of work that I want to do, and show my style at the same time.
In a recent mastermind meeting with my family, I discuss my two potential spec projects.
In the video, we talk a lot about how I need to show people what my style is, and that can be just sketching, 3d models, anything that starts to give a glimpse of what I’m about. That is the next step in getting this business going and attracting the clients that are a good fit.
